Basildon Council provides several recommended walking routes to explore the area’s scenic countryside including circular walks and local nature trails as well as information on public rights of way in the area.
Essex Highways
The Essex Highways website includes resources for walking in Essex as part of its “Safer, Greener, Healthier” initiative. This initiative encourages sustainable travel options, promoting walking as a healthy and eco-friendly mode of transportation. Find a number of guides for walking along public rights of way throughout the county, including longer walks, walks that pass through a country park or nature reserve and shorter walks in the area.
Active 10
The Active 10 app is a free walking tracker from the NHS. It’s a simple way to take away the guesswork of how active you have been. The app uses sensors in your device to anonymously record every minute of walking you do, even when they’re spread out across the day.
To achieve an ‘active 10’ you just need to clock up 10 minutes of brisk walking throughout the day, you don’t have to walk for 10 consecutive minutes!

The Ramblers
The Ramblers promote walking for pleasure, health, leisure and transport to everyone of all ages, backgrounds and abilities in towns and cities as well as in the countryside. Their website is full of resources to get you walking, including organised walking routes, advice on walking with health conditions and the benefits of walking.
The Basildon Greenway are a local Ramblers group which covers Basildon, Billericay and Wickford. Walks take place with the group on Tuesday mornings (short walk) and Sundays (longer walks). The walks are a great way to get out and meet new people.
Basildon District Rambling Club
The group meet to walk every Saturday afternoon throughout the year commencing at 2pm. Most of their walks are usually between 4 to 5 miles in distance and are within about a 20-mile radius of the Borough of Basildon.
